Reaching a holiday flat at midnight from Schiphol, and a massage inside it
A rented flat in the canal belt has no night desk, no porter and often no lift. For a traveller who lands late, getting inside is a small project of its own, and a session that night depends on it going smoothly.
Holiday flats in Amsterdam are usually handed over with nobody present: a code for the street door, a key box on the landing, a page of instructions sent the day before. That works well in the afternoon and less well at half past midnight, when the stairwell light runs on a timer and the house numbering along a canal is hard to follow in the dark. Read the instructions before you fly, save them offline, and keep the host's photograph of the front door to hand if one was sent.
The address, exactly
Canal houses share street numbers with letters and floors: a flat may be the third floor of one building, or the rear part of another behind a shared hallway. Send the thread the address exactly as the host wrote it, with the floor, the letter and any note about which bell to press. A therapist arriving at night should never have to guess which of four doorbells is yours.
Stairs, neighbours and quiet
Old Amsterdam stairs are steep and narrow, and the walls between flats are often thin. The neighbours are asleep when you arrive and will be asleep when she leaves. Keep voices low on the landing, close doors gently, and choose a format that suits the space: an oil or sensual massage needs a bed and her towels, while formats built around a long shower are better kept for a flat with a proper bathroom. Many rentals also set rules about visitors, so read them before you arrange anything.
When to confirm
In the central districts the arrival window is forty to sixty minutes from confirmation. Confirm once you are inside and the key has worked, not when the taxi drops you at the corner, so she never stands outside a door you cannot yet open. If the key will not come out of the box
Key boxes jam and tired fingers mistype codes. If you are stuck on the doorstep, tell the thread before you call the host; while she has not set out, the start can wait, and the evening may still be saved once you are in.
