A night landing at Schiphol and a bed in De Pijp, with a massage once you are there
De Pijp, south of the canal ring, is full of rented flats, small hotels and late kitchens. A traveller landing at night reaches it quickly from the airport, and the neighbourhood is still half awake when the taxi pulls up.
Built in the nineteenth century as a district for workers, De Pijp is now one of the liveliest parts of Amsterdam: the long market street that empties every evening, the small park at its heart, rows of restaurants and a great many rented apartments. It suits a traveller who wants the city on the doorstep, and on a night arrival it has one quiet advantage, which is that it lies on the southern side of the centre, the side nearer the airport.
Getting there at night
By road the route comes in from the south ring and reaches De Pijp without threading through the old centre. Earlier in the evening a train to Amsterdam Zuid leaves a short taxi ride at the far end; later on, with luggage and the trains thinning out, the direct taxi from the rank at the airport is usually the simpler choice.
Flats above shops
Many visitors here stay in apartments above shops and cafés, reached through a narrow door between two shopfronts and up a steep stair. Give the thread the number, the floor and whether the street door sits beside a shop or behind a gate. If the flat has rules about visitors, read them first, because the session belongs only in a place where your host allows one.
Timing the knock
De Pijp sits inside the central arrival window, forty to sixty minutes from confirmation. Confirm as the taxi leaves the airport if the keys are sorted, or from inside the flat if the handover is by code and you have not tried it yet. Late food and a calm room
Some kitchens in De Pijp keep serving after much of the city has closed, so it is possible to eat something on the way in. Do that before you confirm, not after, so the clock is not running while you wait for a table.
